Hello there
This is the #36 Issue of Weekly Dan.
Ready to become a better Maker?
Every Tuesday, I share an actionable essay for Indie Entrepreneurs.
Today let’s talk about truth bombs.
I always think I was so naive 6 months ago.
Too optimistic about the growth. Too pessimistic about new ideas.
The same will happen in 6 months. And that’s a good thing. It makes me, well, me.
Today’s issue is the farewell to me 6 months ago. And I will say goodbye by reflecting on 4 harsh truths I discovered. I need to remind them to myself daily.
Don’t blame the users
If you are not getting sales, it’s not because users are stupid
If you are not getting likes, it’s not because people don’t have the taste
If you are not getting word-of-mouth, it’s not because your customers are lazy
It’s because of you.
Did you want to become an Entrepreneur? Well, the ultimate ownership comes with the title. Don’t run away from it.
Don’t bury yourself in the blame. You just need to accept that failure happened. It’s (probably) not that terrible. But it did happen.
Accept the failure
Generate ideas to fix it
That’s it.
But don’t blame the users for every mistake you made.
No focus — no growth
Want to grow 2 marketing channels at the same time? You will fail at both.
Want to sell your product to everyone? You will sell to no one.
Want to cover as many use cases as possible? Your product will be terrible.
I hate every second of being focused on one thing.
But an alternative of failing at two things is not better.
Notice when you choose to do two things instead of focusing on one. Is it really necessary, or you just can’t make a tough decision?
Sure, you can tell yourself that this situation is an exception, and you absolutely need to grow both Twitter and LinkedIn at the same time. But we both know you just can’t choose.
Pick one.
Take ownership of your choice.
Plan + Execution > Execution
Want to get more sales? Sharpen your positioning
Want to get remembered? Complete your StoryBrand Framework
Want to build an audience? Understand your content matrix
Spending one day to plan your marketing will save you months of random experiments. You will make tons of tough decisions that will require focus.
You will hate the process. You will second-guess every idea. But the results pay off.
Execution is fun. Thinking is boring.
Start with the boring.
Get out of your comfort zone
I don’t like talking with customers
I don’t like asking for a help
I don’t like recording videos
But Entrepreneurship is not only about doing things that I like.
Sometimes I need to do what’s needs to be done. And usually, I don’t like it all.
This is the part of the game. Learn to enjoy it.
That’s it!
Thank you for reading Weekly Dan. That means a lot to me.
